New Filter For Your Old Gas Mask

With all of the discussions in the media about the dangers of the Bird Flu pandemic I decided to get a new filter for my military surplus gas mask. While I'm not sure if this is going to protect me from Bird Flu, I figured that it couldn't hurt to find a replacement filter to use with my mask.



The mask I own is the Israeli Civilian Gas Mask which is also known as the M15 gas mask. I purchased it at an army navy surplus store a few years back, and it came with one filter that was clearly used as the seal was broken. FYI, I went into the surplus store looking for a pair of combat boots and ended up seeing their gas masks on display and decided to buy one of them too.

So What Kind Of Filter Do I Need?

After doing some research online it appears that the most common gas mask filter is the "NATO-standard" 40mm threaded filter. It would seem that nearly every military issued gas mask uses this sized filter, with few exceptions.


One thing I had always wondered about was whether or not there were different filters for different threats. It would appear from the research I did online that pretty much one filter protects from everything. The only thing that was not protected by any filter was carbon monoxide. So please make sure to never expect any protection from your military surplus gas mask in side of a burning building or room.
