Handcuffs: Hinged Handcuffs by Fury

Handcuffs: Hinged Handcuffs

Many law enforcement and security professionals are switching from traditional chain-link handcuffs to hinged handcuffs. The hinged handcuffs offer a higher level of restraint as the hands are bound closer together which makes manipulating them to the front of your body nearly impossible.

There are many different manufacturers of hinged handcuffs, some of the better known are Smith and Wesson, Peerless, Hiatts, and the Chicago Handcuff Company. There are also many overseas manufacturers making quality hinged handcuffs, however they are not as well known as they are marketed towards civilians and not law enforcement agencies. Most of the imported hinged handcuffs also are not approved by the National Institute of Justice so they cannot be used by law enforcement agencies for liability and safety reasons.

Considering that the reviews on this site are geared towards private citizens and not law enforcement officers, I decided that the most appropriate set of handcuffs to review would be one of the imported units. The price is $20 or less at most stores online, and is far easier to obtain than most of the law enforcement brands. Having had great luck with the less-expensive imported version of the ASP telescoping baton, I felt like I could get lucky with the imported brand of hinged handcuffs.

The handcuffs I ordered were the Fury brand from Spain. According to the information I found online, these are made by by Larranaga Y Elorza in Spain. They are marketed in the US under the "Fury" brand, and in Europe under the Alcyon brand. They come with two universal double-lock handcuff keys, which appears to be the standard for all sets of handcuffs.

After searching arounbd for who to buy these handcuffs from, I settled on buying from Discount Handcuff Warehouse after finding them on Google. They apparently come highly recommended by most sources, and they had the items in stock that I wanted. While I could have shopped around for a better price, I decided that saving a buck or two wasn't worth the extra effort. The shipping was however very quick, and I was happy to have my new handcuffs in two days.

The handcuffs are actually much nicer than what I was expecting. They were wrapped in corrosion-resistant paper similar to what guns are shipped in, so the finish on the cuffs was free from any rust spots or corrision. While the cuffs aren't as "shiny" as some of the ones I've seen on police officers belts, they still look great. The handcuffs appear to be made of four layers of steel riveted together, and the hinged links appear to be made of solid steel.

I decided to try the handcuffs on to see how comfortable they are, and was surprised at how tight they felt. While I guess that is the desired effect, I guess I was expecting them to be a bit more loose. That sounds crazy, doesn't it? I will say that the hinges definately restricted my movement and I'm certain that even if you were a contortionist you would not be able to move these cuffs from your back to your front. To put it simply you won't be able to put the square peg in the round hole.

Wanting to see how much abuse these cuffs would take, I took them out to my work shop and hit them as hard as I could with a steel hammer. They did not crack, dent, or deform in any way! The finish was a bit marred, but the handcuffs held up great function wise! I took a chisel to one of the hinges and hit the chisel with my hammer, and no noticeable damage to any of the links could be observed. I'm confident that if you were locked in these, it would take great effort to cut them off!

Here is a picture of the cuffs I bought:
