CHATHAM, N.C. -- A 16-year-old in handcuffs is on the loose near U.S. 1 in Chatham County, authorities said.
According to Captain Gardner with Chatham Co. Communications, officers were trying to serve a warrant on the teen because he was supposed to be in juvenile court. Officers were able to get the teen in
handcuffs and then he took off.
Authorities said he was spotted in the area but he isn't in custody. The suspect apparently ran into the woods just off Pttsboro-Moncure Road. An intense K-9 search continues just off U.S. 1. He is not believed to be armed and dangerous.
An officer remains at Moncure Elementary School as a safety precaution, but the school is no longer under a lockdown. No other schools in the area are impacted by the situation.
